Second Baptist Church

The Second Baptist Church was located between Main and Lincoln streets in Woodland. The former St. Luke’s  building was sold to the congregation on December 7, 1909 for $10. The building burned down in 1971. Originally founded in 1894 by three African-American women: Sophia Bardain Ramos, Mary Earl Padmore, and Mary Frances Gaither. By the second year of its existence, the congregation had grown to 50 members. This exhibit provides newspaper articles, photographs, and Articles of Incorporation.
